I was commissioned by Autostraddle to design face masks for their store. The brief was the designs had to be seamless, tileable patterns. I was encouraged to explore queer themes and also variants on the Autostraddle logo.
I explored concepts like tarot imagery and butch/femme symbols. The Autostraddle team approved concepts 5 and 6.
I wanted the colour schemes of each pattern to be as opposite to each other as possible. I chose warm summer colours for the floral pattern and drew flowers with suggestive shapes and names.
This design was a deconstructed look at the Autostraddle logo. I wanted to evoke Memphis design in this pattern and went through several colour variants to lock down a palette that was bright and exciting.
In the end the team and I agreed to stick to a dark background with bright elements, seen above with other masks designed by Maanya Dhar and Ren Strapp.
